Overview: Special Materials Company (SMC) was incorporated in Delaware in 1996. The company is a global marketer, producer and developer of specialty chemical products. The company has offices in Cherry Hill, NJ, New York City, Hanover, Germany, and Nanjing, China. Products are stocked in 14 Warehouses in North America and 3 warehouses in Europe. In addition SMC has controlling interest in two Chinese Joint Venture Manufacturing operations. Business Model: SMC creates value for its customers by bringing them lower cost raw materials produced in developing countries without the risks normally associated with these areas. This is done by careful "hands on" control of the product's quality, using specific knowledge gained by SMC's staff of specialists through years of industry experience, working closely with our suppliers, and by creating trust through honest business practices. SMC creates value for its suppliers by applying modern business practices to the marketing of products, supplying technology and capital to improve the products, and assisting its suppliers to gain stable, long term participation in SMC's markets. SMC employs industry experts in each of its market areas to provide technical and commercial guidance to our suppliers and customers. With this expertise, SMC provides at a lower cost the depth of service that our customers desire but do not always receive from their traditional suppliers. Scope of business: SMC has 8 main areas of business activity, described below: Phosphorus derivatives: SMC's phosphorus derivatives business was the first area of the company's activity. The company offers a line of P4 derived products from reducing agents to fire retardants and has the capability to custom produce specialized organo-phosphorus molecules. These products are produced in SMC's Joint Venture factory "Changshu New-Tech Chemicals Ltd", in Changshu, Jiangsu, China. Titanium Dioxide SMC supplies a range of Anatase products, from dry milled paper grades (in slurry and dry form) to highly reactive grades for specialized pigments to a fiber de-lustering grade. The company also supplies a low cost Rutile product for coating and plastic applications where opacity is preferred over color brightness Cyanides & Electroplating additives SMC supplies metallic cyanides for use in Electroplating and chemical synthesis. Polymer & Coating additives SMC supplies a variety of additives used in polymer, resin, and coatings production, including adhesion promoters, catalyst scavengers, and a VOC exempt solvent. Photochemical / Information chemicals SMC supplies a line of chemicals used for production of developing solutions as well as specialized molecules used in producing coupling agents and other image processing chemicals. SMC also has a new capability to synthesize novel imaging chemicals to customer requirements. General Chemicals & Intermediates SMC offers a variety of halogenated organics for use as pharmaceutical and agricultural chemical intermediates as well as reactants for a number of fine chemical applications. Pool Chemicals SMC offers a line of trichloro and dichloroisocyanurates for use in detergents, cleansers, sanitizers, and industrial and recreational water treatment products. Sourcing / "Orphan" Products SMC has broad capabilities to source hard to find chemical products and has been successful in setting up stable supply channels for a number of "orphaned" products. With many specialty chemical companies rationalizing their product portfolios, this has become an important service to SMC's customer base. SMC maintains Industry Consultants and independent laboratories on retainer, and uses them as needed to provide technical service and development work. Together we strive to provide our customers with high quality products and excellent technical support at lower cost.
