The common processes for ore dressing include gravity separation, flotation separation, magnetic separation and electrical separation. The following text will elaborate on these four methods.

A. Gravity Separation

It is an industrial method of separating minerals by the difference of their relative density. Mineral particles of different density receive the hydrodynamic and various mechanical force in the moving medium like water, air and heavy liquid, causing proper loose strata and separation conditions, by which minerals of different density are separated.

B. Flotation Separation

According to the physical and chemical differences among minerals, they can cling on air bubbles selectively through flotation reagent’s disposal. The ore dressing of nonferrous metal like copper, lead, zinc, sulphur, molybdenum, etc. usually adopts this method.

C. Magnetic Separation

This method is based on the different mineral’s magnetic property. They are separated by the different acting force in the magnetic field of magnetic separator. It is mainly used in the separation of ferrous metal like iron, manganese, chromium, etc. It also can be adopted in the separation of nonferrous metal and rare mental.

D. Electrical Separation

Minerals are separated by the difference of mineral’s conductivity. When minerals are in the high-voltage electric field of electricslot, due to the different conductivity, minerals are separated by the different acting electrostatic force. At present, it is mainly used in the separation of mixed crude concentrate like the separation of scheelite and cassiterite, the concentration of zircon and tantalum-niobium ores, etc.
