For years, reshoring was something companies talked about in strategy decks but rarely executed. The cost math always seemed to favor staying offshore. That calculation has changed \u2014 and today, April 22, 2026, it changed again.<\/p>\n
This morning, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer testified before the Ways and Means Committee, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to what it calls the America First trade agenda \u2014 one that has, over the past 14 months, fundamentally restructured how manufacturers source, produce, and plan.<\/p>\n
The reshoring momentum is no longer theoretical. GlobalFoundries has committed $16 billion to reshore chip manufacturing. Stellantis announced $13 billion in U.S. production investment. Johnson & Johnson is spending $55 billion to build domestic facilities. Across all sectors, federal announcements in 2025 pointed to more than $200 billion in multi-year U.S. investment commitments.<\/p>\n
At the same time, tariffs have raised landed costs on steel, aluminum, electronics, and machinery \u2014 with overall manufacturing employment down 72,000 jobs since April 2025 as companies absorb or restructure around the new cost reality.<\/p>\n
Not every manufacturer can bring production back to U.S. soil overnight. That’s where nearshoring fills the gap. Mexico has now surpassed China as the U.S.’s top trading partner, and more than 80% of large manufacturers plan to shift supply chains closer to market, according to Bain & Company.<\/p>\n
