Loaded/unloaded compressors operate continuously and are ideal for sustained high loads over 90%. Variable frequency drive VFD compressors adjust their speed according to the load and achieve peak efficiency with loads below 90%. Modulating compressors also adapt to demand, but they are significantly less efficient than VFDs. Often, VFDs are paired with modulating or loaded/unloaded compressors to optimize efficiency.
